Top Gear Magazine pitted two performance machines against one another

In a recent edition of Top Gear magazine a head-to-head test-track battle was held between the Tesla Model 3 Performance and the BMW M3.

Clearly, by the headline, the EV car edged the fossil fuel champion in the content of four challenges: a drag race, 0-100-0, hot lap, and a drift of f at the Thunderhill Raceway Park West circuit. Both vehicles were stock models and run without modifications; each were helmed by the same driver.

The video (which you can see here), has comments from the test drives. One said that the BMW felt inferior to the Tesla in overall performance.

"When you floor (the BMW), the throttle response is glacial by comparison, and the accompanying racket isn’t quite as glorious as you remember — more of a distraction from listening to what the tires are doing and getting on with the business of going fast.”

The Tesla Model 3 is the first fully electrified, mid-sized sedan that has been mass produced by any automaker, and its base platform was not developed for performance, rather focusing on more tech-centric innovation like efficiency, zero emissions, and forthcoming autonomy, where as the BMW M3 has been a motor sport division stalwart.

As powertrains are improving and battery life is lengthened it will only be a matter of when and not it that EVs are the preferred choice of all drivers. With performance now not being a deciding factor, and purchase prices leveling off, Tesla may be able to start turning profits in 2019.
